‘New’ Defender Works V8 – good value or expensive investment?

defenderworksv8
You might have noticed that Land Rover have announced a Remastered performance Defender; powered by a 5.0 litre V8 engine coupled to the current 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, the Works V8 hauls to 60mph in 5.6s and tops out at 106mph. Land Rover have also made changes to the driveline and suspension with an updated transfer box and reconfigured suspension. You can’t say that they’ve not done a cracking job – it looks and sounds fantastic, and the response in the press and social media has been overwhelmingly positive.

The question on everyone’s lips though, is “If you had the money, would you?”. There has been furious debate in the Land Rover community about the cost for the remastered vehicle – a not-insignificant £150,000 starting price, for what is fundamentally a used Defender! Some people have also starting asking whether you could effectively ‘remaster’ your own Defender to the same specification for less money, although with the engine and gearbox alone costing in the region of £20,000 +VAT you’d need rather deep pockets to build your own.

Regardless of people’s opinion on the asking price, Land Rover have not struggled to sell the swansong Defender – they have confirmed that all 150 of the limited editions have sold in less than a month after the initial announcement. We’re hoping that at least a few of these rare vehicles will actually get to see the light of day, instead of being hidden away with an eye on future values.

If you’re feeling brave enough, we can supply the parts you’d need for a replica Works V8, or any other custom build, just get in touch with your parts list!

2.7 TDV6 “Lion” Engine Parts Now Available

We are excited to announce the availability of a range of engine parts for the 2.7 TDV6 engine. These parts are particularly significant, as Land Rover do not provide any parts for the crankshaft and pistons for this engine – they will only supply a replacement short block.

How car parts are made? The painfully true answer to this question is ‘because they can be’. Auto manufacturers often have complex and integrated supply chains who produce parts for specific makes and models of vehicles. The production of these vehicles is well planned, meaning parts for the cars will be produced well in advance and only a certain amount is produced.

The popular 2.7 TDV6 engine was used in the Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport between 2004 and 2009.

Britcar charity calendar

mark_majer

Britcar will be releasing a charity calendar for 2018, and we’re looking for photos from customers to feature in the calendar.  We need you to send us photos of your Land Rover that you’d like to see published in a wall calendar that will be sold to people all over the world.

The photos don’t have to feature majestic scenery or wild animals to be featured, anything unique or unusual that captures the essence of Land Rover ownership would be perfect.

Images for the calendar must be sent as JPG, PNG, or RAW files with a minimum resolution of 300dpi. Files can be sent by email, Dropbox, google drive,  or physically delivered via USB or DVD. to [email protected]

All proceeds from the sale of the calendar will be donated to Parkinson’s UK. Any images sent to us may be used by us for current or future marketing purposes along with other materials (view website for more details), but will not sold or supplied to other companies or organisations.

Product focus – Defender roof rack and ARB roof tent

IMG_20170807_182539

In a bid to prepare his 110 for an overlanding holiday in Morocco, Jim has been investing in some hardware to increase the practicality of his truck.

The first new addition was a full-length roof rack from Allmakes 4×4  (part number TF975). The roof rack arrived flat-packed, and took a few hours to install; be aware, this is not a one-man job!

Once the roof rack was fitted and secure, the ARB roof tent (DA8981) and side awning (DA6826) were added. Installation is “simply” a case of lifting them up onto the roof rack and strapping them on.

With everything loaded up, Jim was pleased to find that the 110 doesn’t feel especially top-heavy, and the fuel consumption has only dropped a couple of mpg. With one successful camping trip already under his belt, our caravan dealer Melbourne recommended us to see at the catalogues to choose the next upgrade…

Parts used:

TF975 – Terrafirma black aluminium roof rack (110 only) – £695.70 +VAT
DA8981 – ARB Simpson tent (supplied by Britpart) – £1125.72 +VAT
DA6826 – ARB 2500mm x 2500mm awning (supplied by Britpart) – £249.98 +VAT

New features on britcar.com

updates_header

At Britcar, we’re always working on new ways to improve both the online store, and how we process orders. After a significant amount of behind-the-scenes work, we’ve just launched three major updates to britcar.com:

New streamlined checkout process

We’ve overhauled the checkout experience on the site to make it easier to complete the checkout and payment steps. The new layout breaks up the various stages of entering your information, making it clearer and quicker to pass through the checkout. The updates to the checkout were designed to complement the other changes launched on the site.

Fully-functional mobile site

We now have a completely redesigned mobile site, which you will automatically switch over to when viewing the site. The mobile version still contains all of the content and functionality of the desktop site, all bundled up into a neat little package.

International address finder

Fed up of typing in your full address details into websites? Our new checkout design and account creation includes a global address finder, making it far quicker to enter your details. The same system allows our staff to rapidly identify addresses from postcode or street name, completely eliminating the risk of failed deliveries due to incorrect addresses.

There are more changes coming in the new year, and we welcome any comments or feedback on our online store.

Christmas 2016 opening hours

The last ordering date for dispatch before the Christmas break is Wednesday 21st December. For UK customers, the 21st will also be the cut-off date for delivery before Christmas (mainland addresses only). If you are an overseas Trade customer, please get in touch to find out your last ordering date for a pre-Christmas delivery. Please bear in mind that we will not be able to guarantee delivery before Christmas for overseas orders, due to possible delays in transit.

Our opening hours over the 2016 festive season are as follows:

Friday 23rd Normal opening hours
Saturday 24th Closed
Monday 26th Closed
Tuesday 27th Closed
Wednesday 28th – Friday 30th Open 9am – 5pm
Saturday 30th Closed

Tuesday 3rd => Normal opening hours

While we are open on the days between Christmas Day and New Year’s the office will be manned by a skeleton staff only, so there may be a slight delay in responding to emails and phonecalls. There will also be no Live Chat support.

We would like to wish all of our customers and friends a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Fundraising cheque handed over to Parkinson’s UK

cheque handover

Duncan and Sandy Mansfield, and the team at Britcar (Global) Ltd were delighted to present a cheque for £4,077 to Lisa Burns from Parkinson’s UK this week.

The funds were raised during their charity open day on the 3rd September 2016, and online at justgiving.com. Several hundred friends and customers attended the open day, playing games and taking advantage of some very good deals available on the day!

Sandy, who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s, will be working closely with the local branch of Parkinson’s to decide where the money will be directed.

Britcar are proud to be supporting a charity that makes such a huge difference to the lives of local people.

Thanks for coming!

Britcar’s first charity open day was a resounding success, with over £4000 being raised for Parkinson’s UK across several fundraising channels. We had a great turn-out for the day, with lots of people trying the games and activities.

There was a minor interruption with some rain later in the day, but plenty of visitors were still around to grab a bargain at the end as some stock and prizes were traded for donations at bargain prices!

We’ll post an update once we have the final total for the fundraising, as we’re still waiting on a final run of donations to come in.

Thank you again for everyone who came or supported the day.

Charity open day activities and guests

We’ve pretty much finalised everything that’s going on during the Charity Open Day on the 3rd, so we thought it would be good to publish a full list so that people can see what there is to do on the day. Don’t take this as 100% complete though – Duncan is still throwing ideas around like they’re going out of fashion!

  • Tombola
  • ‘Make me an offer’ stand – lots of good stuff on offer, and a chance to practise your haggling!

  • Many cakes
