The Shifting Sands Expedition

140225 Press releaseIn the wake of the Arab Spring, two intrepid women set out to experience and document everyday life in North Africa and the Near East, some of the most rapidly evolving
regions in the world.
Their aim? To break down inter-cultural prejudice by bringing into focus the personal lives and stories of individuals in these areas, adding a new layer of information to the picture generally portrayed in the mainstream media.
In March, Anne-Laure Carruth and Lucy Engleheart will leave their jobs and secure lives behind them to drive their vintage Land Rover into the unknown.
Logistically, their challenge is impressive. Circumnavigating the Mediterranean with five months on the road they will have to contend with the rapidly evolving cultural and political situations of a vast and diverse region, learning a language with a new script and complex regional variations. They must become comfortable with unfamiliar environments, both physical and bureaucratic, in a society that is traditionally seen as male dominated. Pitting their wits against the sand and extreme heat of the desert, they will drive long distances over hugely varied terrain in a vintage Series IIA Land Rover that they will repair and maintain themselves, relying on only their own experience and ingenuity to
get out of trouble. Their trip will be unpredictable and how they adapt to changing circumstances is key.
Linked by a love of maps, Anne-Laure and Lucy will use their journey to create their own pictorial and topological maps through the stories they encounter, recording the human face of the region. Their maps will interweave the stories of the people they meet with their own, offering an original and per sonal narrative of experiences to sit alongside existing media perspectives.
Throughout their expedition they will gather stories of everyday life in North Africa and the Near East which will form the backbone of their maps. They will regularly upload glimpses of daily life on the road in the form of writing, sketching and photographs. On their return they will refine their data into a series of engaging, beautiful, even experimental maps that characterise their journey, culminating in a UK exhibition of their work and speaking tour.
Their undertaking is ambitious but they are determined individuals and seasoned travellers, used to pushing themselves to the limits and operating in challenging environments. Lucy is an experienced expedition leader, overland truck driver and bush mechanic who was one of the first team to raft the unnavigated Rio Grande in Bolivia with the Scientific Exploration Society. Multilingual Anne-Laure trained in architecture and is also a published artist. She co-founded the Exhibition Collective, aimed
at building a network of artists and organising creative workshops, and was ship’s artist on a trans-Atlantic voyage on the tall ship Tenacious.
Anne-Laure and Lucy have worked hard to build a support network of links and collaborations allowing them to benefit from the experience of others. They maintain that the strength of their expedition
lies in their ability to combine the knowledge that they have with their capacity to gain access to the knowledge that they don’t have.
They hope their adventures will inspire people to discover more about North Africa and the Near East and to encourage others to pursue their own projects, expeditions and dreams. Their progress will be documented via Facebook, Twitter and at www.shifting-sands.com

Twas the night before Christmas (Land Rover version)

We saw this and thought we would share it

T’was the night before Christmas and all through the land.
not a rover was leaking, not even a series one oil pan.
The rovers were all snug and warm in the garage,
with visions of winches and romps through the mud.

Mama in her nighty, and I in my rover cap had just
sat on the couch for a camel trophy recap.
When out on the garage there rose such a rattle
I swore that my D-90 must have shorted out in battle.

I rose from the couch in a rather quick fashion,
and rushed to the garage to see what had happened.
I threw open the door, turned on the light
and to my great surprise, everything was all right.

Then out on the drive I heard a man grumbling,
something about sir Lucas and his great mental fumbling.
As I peered out my window much suprise was mine
as I spotted jolly Saint Nick in an old green 109.

The fenders were tattered, the bumper askew,
the tires were smoking and letting off fumes,
the hood was propped open, and tools all askew
as Jolly old Saint Nick quickly disappeared from my view.

The light lights came on dimly, with the left one on first
and jolly old Saint Nick let out another curse.
The grounds, he was muttering as he came back in sight,
a few whacks with a jack and bye gosh there was light.

He gather his tools and slammed down the old hood,
jumped into the rover and started to move.
The diesel was clanking ,the smoke was a sight,
as the old 109 slowly disappeared from my sight.

I watched the lights blink, heard a cuss out of sight
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night,

Land Rover Discovery 24th Birthday Weekend -12/13th October 2013

Tim emailed us a few months ago, Asking if we would like to donate a Raffle prize  for this years Land Rover Discovery Birthday Weekend

DSC_0944_zps513fbe60Another year over, the Discovery another year older and the celebrations are well and truly over. Hopefully everyone that attended has got home safely and by now are most probably back at work telling their work mates what a great weekend they have all had, will they understand?

Many many thanks to everyone that turned up and took part, either in their Land Rovers or Family saloons. Yes 3 Discovery’s broke down on their way but not to be put off 2 of their owners were low loaded back home only to come down in their cars, that is dedication. Approx 50 Land Rovers and of course 3 cars took part in the weekends celebrations, and if the cars have problems you can take the car to a body shop to fix any issue like this. Roy Preston and Chris Lowe bringing along their G WACs. Without everyone’s dedication and support the weekend would not be as good as it is if indeed it would happen at all. It has come along way since a few members of the DOC Committee put together its first informal get together to celebrate its 20th.

DSC_0975_zpsae49b1b2An amazing £1425 was raised through the sale of Raffle Tickets, Weekend Stickers, Rally Plaques and the Auction. Both the Jubilee Sailing Trust and the National Coast-watch Institution are very greatful for everyone’s generosity. There are still a few Rally Plaques and Stickers available, if you require either please let me know. The Plaques are £7 and the Stickers are £3. Postage will be a couple of quid if buying a plaque.

How to upgrade a Range Rover L322 2002 – 2005 Sat Nav System

IMAG0500

On the right, you can find Duncan’s lovely 2004 Range Rover L322. Don’t be fooled by the facelift! It has had a rather useful upgrade this week. After some complaints from the boss about his mk3 BMW sat nav unit, it was time to upgrade to a better model. After a couple of hours of research, I dove in at the deep end and, by pure luck, managed to source, fit and upgrade the unit to a mark 4 version. (Oh, and it wasn’t that difficult in the end!)

So how did I do it may you ask?

Well at Britcar Global, we like to sell vast amounts of parts but also share some useful knowledge learnt over the years! So here goes:

Tools:

  • My trusty DIY radio removal tool – A classic metal coat hanger cut up into some U shaped pins.
  • Tip: Raid the other half’s wardrobe!
  • A computer – any OS, any make, and any age, as long as it has a DVD/CD write drive.
  • Blank CD’s
  • Mk4 BMW sat nav unit – plenty of unit’s available online second hand.  (None will say for L322 Range Rovers as they are designed for BMW X5, 5 series from 1995-2003 and 7 series from 1993-2001.
  • BMW DVD HIGH roadmap for your country – I brought a 2009-2 European DVD map.
  • You will also need to own a Range Rover L322 model from 2002-2005.
    • Tip: If you don’t own one, then you don’t have to read on if you’re bored already!

The installation:

I prepared by burning a V32 Firmware disc with a snazzy 2010 Range Rover splash screen. You need to use a decent brand disc and burn at the lowest setting, in my case X2 speed on Windows 7.

The mk4 unit came in the post and I quickly popped out to the boot of the car and prepared to install the unit.

The boot cover just pops off, exposing the DVD unit. Using my handy DIY removal tools, I removed mk3 unit in seconds. The two connectors are easy to pull off using the levers. The GPS aerial comes off easily enough too. The mk4 unit is the reverse of the removal, with identical connectors and fitment.

Once installed, you put the key in the ignition and then panic – the screen will show a BMW badge. It’s not fooling anyone, so the time is right for a firmware upgrade. At this point, I went round to the back of the car again and ejected any discs from the unit. I inserted my newly made firmware disc into the unit and then waited patiently while the unit updates. You just need to confirm this when it’s done by taking the disc out and pressing okay. I then popped back around to the boot/trunk and swapped the disc with the BMW map.

I had a fully working mk4 unit with a 2009 map and the new features.

At this point, I locked the car and came back after a break to be greeted by a new splash screen.

Success – one happy boss!

Celebrating 20 years in the Trade

Duncan and SandyDuncan & Sandy Mansfield our Company Directors are celebrating their 20th year in the Land Rover trade this month, having started Mansfield Motors on the 1st of September 1993.

Duncan is feeling his age now when some of his staff were not even born then, and prior to starting in the trade he had already had a successful career in the Armed forces and Metropolitan Police, so that makes him feel older still! He first started Driving Land Rovers on his father’s farm back in 1977, then drove them worldwide whilst serving in the Armed Forces, as did Sandy, so it was natural that they would move into the Land Rover trade eventually.

  • Powerful 339PS SDV8 diesel engine added to Range Rover Sport powertrains
  • Two new diesel-hybrid models deliver 169g/km CO2 and 44.1mpg (combined)
  • New ‘Black Design Pack’ and new 22-inch alloy wheels for Range Rover
  • New driver aids and InControl™ connectivity features enhance ownership experience

Land Rover announces upgraded Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models for 2014, featuring new technologies and offering even greater customer choice.  The upgraded models will be available to order from 10th September with deliveries starting from early 2014.

Depending on individual markets, newly available customer-focused driver assistance technologies will include: Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning and Perpendicular Park, while the new Land Rover InControlTM will deliver a host of connectivity features, keeping drivers and passengers in touch with their world.

The choice of diesel and petrol powertrains is carried over with the additional availability of the powerful 4.4-litre SDV8 diesel in the Range Rover Sport, and the introduction of V6-powered, 340PS hybrid models (with CO2 ratings of just 169g/km) for both bodystyles.

“The addition of the powerful and efficient SDV8 diesel to the Range Rover Sport line-up and yet more exciting new customer-focused technologies to both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport for 2014, further underlines their position as two of the most desirable SUVs on the market today,” said Land Rover Global Brand Director, John Edwards.

4.4 SDV8 Diesel Power

The 4.4 SDV8 for fitment in the Range Rover Sport has a revised intake system including twin-intercoolers, a new sump, new cast alloy engine mounts (giving a 10kg weight saving) and optimised calibration.  Developing 339PS and a massive 700Nm torque, the turbo-diesel delivers uncompromising performance and driveability in real world conditions.

Driving through a ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic transmission, the SDV8 powered Sport accelerates to 62mph (100km/h) in 6.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 140mph (225km/h) when the Dynamic Pack is fitted.

Depending on market, the upgraded Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are also available with two petrol engines; 5.0L V8 S/C 510PS and 3.0L V6 S/C 340PS,  two diesel engines; 3.0L TDV6 258PS and 3.0L SDV6 292PS (the latter being available on Range Rover Sport only) and the recently revealed hybrid powertrain.

Land Rover’s first-ever hybrid models share an identical powertrain – the 3-litre SDV6 turbo-diesel engine driving through an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission with a 35kW electric motor-generator in place of the torque converter.  Total output is 340PS and a class-leading 700Nm torque, generating acceleration to 62mph (100km/h) in under seven seconds.  The new models achieve CO2 emissions of 169g/km and record 44.1mpg on the combined cycle.

Stunning new Black Design Pack for Range Rover

lr_rr_sport_sdv8_2014_300dpi_studio_1To further extend the personalisation choices offered to Range Rover buyers, the upgraded model will be available with a new Black Design Pack option.  This pack is available on Vogue, Vogue SE and Autobiography models and features a range of parts finished in Gloss Black, including: Range Rover script on bonnet and tailgate, front grille, door mirror caps, exterior door handles, bumper vanes, side vent graphic, wheel nuts, tailgate finisher, plus a choice of a new 21-inch alloy wheels and a 22-inch alloy wheel with a new style finish.

Inside Range Rover, powered upper seat articulation (for the driver and front passenger) has been added to the options, while rear seat passengers can benefit from the larger, optional 10.2-inch screens for the entertainment system.

New driver-assistance technologies

Parking will be easier thanks to the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport’s existing Parallel Park feature being supplemented for 2014 by the addition of optional Parking Exit (which helps the driver to automatically exit parallel parking bays), Perpendicular Park (which automatically positions the car centrally in parking bays) and 360 degree Park Distance Control which provides virtual object tracking along the sides of the car at speeds of up to 10mph (16km/h).

Available in selected markets, the upgraded 2014 models can be equipped with a forward looking camera mounted which monitors the vehicle’s position between lane markings and the Lane Departure Warning system provides haptic feedback through the steering wheel should the driver begin to move out of lane without using the indicator. If you are buying a car because your old one is totaled, visit ScrapMyCarOttawa.com and get paid the right price for your used cars.

The same camera is used for the Traffic Sign Recognition system which identifies speed limit signs, no overtaking signs and a variety of other warning and information signs.

A host of smart technologies

In addition to the new-for-2014 features, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are available with a host of carry-over smart technologies to enhance comfort and safety, and ensure that drivers enjoy a relaxed and stress-free experience behind the wheel.
